40 ft heavy-duty commercial flagpole with an 8" butt and 0.188" wall, made in the USA from 6063-T6 aluminum and shipped as a two-piece shaft. Wind-rated to 184 MPH without flag, it's the high-wind 40-footer for coastal sites, dealerships, and signature campus entrances that demand maximum strength. Complete kit ships with a gold or silver ball ornament, revolving truck, halyard, vinyl-covered flag snaps, cleat, flash collar, and steel ground sleeve. Recommended flag: 8' x 12'. Available in Satin, Clear Anodized, Bronze Anodized, and Black Anodized finishes.
Specifying a 40 ft Heavy-Duty Commercial Flagpole (0.188" Wall)
The 40 ft heavy-duty commercial flagpole is the high-wind, high-liability version of our 40-footer. Same 8-inch butt diameter as the standard, but stepped up to a 0.188-inch wall thickness — roughly 20% more aluminum in the shaft — and manufacturer-rated to 184 MPH unflagged. Built from 6063-T6 architectural aluminum, shipped as a two-piece shaft for freight-friendly delivery. The full kit ships with a gold or silver ball ornament, single-pulley revolving truck, halyard, vinyl-covered flag snaps, gold-anodized cleat, flash collar, and steel ground sleeve.
This is the pole specified for coastal commercial sites, signature campus entrances, large dealerships flying 8×12 ft flags 24/7 with illumination, and any 40 ft application in ASCE 7 Exposure Category D. Stamped engineering letters are available within 5–10 business days for an additional fee on commercial-address orders. Lead time is 2–4 weeks; freight delivery to a commercial dock is included.
Ideal Use Cases
- •Coastal commercial sites within 20 miles of the Atlantic, Gulf, or Pacific
- •Large auto dealership groups with signature highway-visible flagpoles
- •Civic monuments and veterans memorials in high-wind regions
- •Corporate headquarters with 24/7 illuminated displays
- •Resort and casino property entrances
- •ASCE 7 Exposure Category D sites that call for the extra margin of a 0.188" wall
Frequently Asked Questions
When does the heavy-duty 40 ft justify the price premium over the standard?
Three cases: (1) the site is within 20 miles of a coast or in ASCE 7 Exposure Category D, (2) the flag is illuminated and flown 24/7, or (3) the site is on an exposed ridge, lakeshore, or open plain with no surrounding windbreak. For inland Exposure B/C sites with a standard daytime flag, the standard 0.156" wall is engineered for the load and the upgrade is not required.
What is the real-world wind rating with a flag flying?
The 184 MPH rating is unflagged. With an 8×12 ft U.S. flag flying, the effective rating drops to approximately 110 MPH due to flag drag load — still well above the design wind speed for nearly every inland site in the U.S. The standard 40-footer drops to roughly 95 MPH under the same conditions.
Is the foundation different from the standard 40-footer?
No. Both poles use the same 60" deep × 24" diameter footing and the same steel ground sleeve. The added wall thickness affects how the pole handles wind load, not how it transfers load into the ground.
Do I get stamped engineering drawings?
Yes — available within 5–10 business days for an additional fee on commercial-address orders. Specify your AHJ and ASCE 7 exposure category. For coastal Exposure D installs, we can also provide a site-specific wind-load calculation if your jurisdiction requires it.
How long does it take to deliver?
Typical lead time is 2–4 weeks. Satin and clear-anodized finishes ship fastest; bronze and black anodized add 1–2 weeks. Freight to a commercial dock is included; lift-gate service is available at checkout for sites without a forklift.

Pros installing for clients who need reliable lead times, predictable specs, and a 5-year shaft warranty.
This Pole's Specs
Manufacturer-tested wind rating and recommended flag size for this exact model. Sizing your flag correctly keeps the pole within its rated wind speed. See the full sizing guide →
Wind rating reflects manufacturer-tested performance for the flagpole without a flag installed. Flying a flag — especially one larger than recommended — reduces the effective wind rating.
How Installation Works
Commercial-grade flagpoles are a more involved install than residential. The pole has to be carefully plumbed and the ground sleeve packed with sand for proper load handling. We recommend professional installation; in Central Ohio we install them ourselves.
It Arrives Ready to Install
In-stock flagpoles ship to 48 states. You receive the pole, ground sleeve, hardware, and instructions.
Set the Ground Sleeve
Dig the foundation per the included spec, set the steel ground sleeve, plumb it true, and pour concrete around it. Let the concrete cure 24–48 hours before installing the pole.
Set the Pole, Pack & Fly
Lower the pole into the cured sleeve and plumb it true. Pack clean, dry sand around the pole inside the sleeve to lock it in and absorb wind load. Attach your halyard and flag and raise it. A 25 ft+ commercial pole typically needs 2–3 people or a small lift.
