    How flag size changes the rating

    Flag area is the dominant load on a flagpole, so the flag you fly has more effect on the pole's real-world wind performance than almost any other factor. A pole rated 110 MPH unflagged can drop to 85 MPH with a 5x8 flag simply because of the added wind load on that flag.
