Specifying a 50 ft Standard Commercial Aluminum Flagpole

A 50 ft pole flies a 10×15 ft flag — the largest flag in regular commercial use and the size you see at car dealerships, civic plazas, corporate campuses, and large school districts. Our 50 ft standard commercial flagpole is built from 6063-T6 architectural aluminum with an 8-inch butt diameter and a 0.188-inch wall thickness, manufacturer-rated to 115 MPH unflagged. It ships as a three-piece shaft for freight-friendly delivery, with internal splices engineered to match the strength of a single extrusion. The full kit includes a gold or silver ball ornament, single-pulley revolving truck, halyard, vinyl-covered flag snaps, gold-anodized cleat, flash collar, and steel ground sleeve.

Stamped engineering letters for permit submission are available within 5–10 business days for an additional fee on commercial-address orders — every 50 ft install we are aware of requires them. Lead time is 3–4 weeks; freight delivery to a commercial dock is included. Plan for lift-gate service and a real installation crew with a boom truck or small crane — this is not a DIY install.

    Ideal Use Cases

    • Auto dealerships, RV dealers, and powersports lots flying a 10×15 ft flag
    • Civic plazas, county courthouses, and city halls
    • Large schools, high schools, and university quads
    • Corporate headquarters and signature office campuses
    • Memorial parks and veterans memorials
    • Hotels, casinos, and resorts wanting a hero-size flag at the entrance

    Installation: What to Expect

A 50 ft pole requires a boom truck or small crane to raise — there is no 2-person manual lift option. Plan for a 3-person crew plus equipment, and budget the better part of a day on-site after the footing has cured.

    1. Excavate a 72" deep × 30" diameter footing below the frost line
    2. Place 6" of #57 crushed gravel for drainage, then set a 30" sonotube form
    3. Center the steel ground sleeve, plumb on two axes, and brace before pouring
    4. Pour 30–40 bags of high-strength concrete in 12" lifts; crown the top to shed water
    5. Cure 7 days minimum (10 days for full design strength) before raising the pole
    6. Splice the three shaft sections on the ground, then raise with a boom truck or crane
    7. Lower into the sleeve, plumb true, pack clean dry sand around the pole inside the sleeve, then install the truck, cleat, halyard, and ball

For Central Ohio installs we handle this turnkey. Elsewhere, hire a flagpole installer or sign contractor — do not subcontract a 50 ft flagpole install to a general landscape crew.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a 50 ft flagpole?

Almost always yes. Nearly every jurisdiction requires a building permit and stamped engineering drawings for a flagpole over 35 ft on commercial property. Stamped engineering letters are available within 5–10 business days for an additional fee — specify your AHJ and ASCE 7 exposure category when ordering.

What size flag should I fly on a 50 ft pole?

A 10×15 ft U.S. flag is the manufacturer-recommended size and the textbook 1:5 height-to-flag ratio. An 8×12 ft flag is acceptable if you want a smaller visual footprint; flying anything larger than 10×15 ft exceeds the design envelope and voids the engineering certification.

When should I upgrade to the 50 ft Extra Tall Heavy Duty (10" butt)?

Upgrade for any coastal site, any ASCE 7 Exposure Category D site, any 24/7 illuminated display, or any installation where the pole is the architectural focal point of the property. The 10" butt steps the unflagged wind rating from 115 MPH to 168 MPH and changes the failure mode in extreme wind events.

    How is the pole delivered?

The 50 ft pole ships as a three-piece shaft via LTL freight to a commercial dock. Lift-gate service is available at checkout for sites without a forklift. The three sections are spliced together on the ground during install using engineered internal splices that match the strength of a single extrusion.

    What is the lead time?

Typical lead time is 3–4 weeks from order to delivery. Satin and clear-anodized finishes ship fastest; bronze and black anodized add 1–2 weeks. Stamped engineering letters are produced in parallel and arrive within 5–10 business days of order.

Wind rating reflects manufacturer-tested performance for the flagpole without a flag installed. Flying a flag — especially one larger than recommended — reduces the effective wind rating.

    How Installation Works

Commercial-grade flagpoles are a more involved install than residential. The pole has to be carefully plumbed and the ground sleeve packed with sand for proper load handling. We recommend professional installation; in Central Ohio we install them ourselves.

    1

    It Arrives Ready to Install

In-stock flagpoles ship to 48 states. You receive the pole, ground sleeve, hardware, and instructions.

    2

    Set the Ground Sleeve

Dig the foundation per the included spec, set the steel ground sleeve, plumb it true, and pour concrete around it. Let the concrete cure 24–48 hours before installing the pole.

    3

Set the Pole, Pack & Fly

Lower the pole into the cured sleeve and plumb it true. Pack clean, dry sand around the pole inside the sleeve to lock it in and absorb wind load. Attach your halyard and flag and raise it. A 25 ft+ commercial pole typically needs 2–3 people or a small lift.
