Pro Tip: A flag that's too large for your pole creates excessive wind load and shortens the life of both the flag and the pole. When in doubt, size down.

Know your wind zone to choose the right flag material and pole gauge

Wind Zone Reference
Low wind — most inland areas. Standard nylon flags and standard-gauge poles work well.
Moderate wind — plains and some coastal areas. Consider heavy-duty nylon or polyester flags.
High wind — Great Plains, mountain passes. Use polyester flags and heavier-gauge poles.
Very high wind — hurricane-prone coasts. Heavy-duty polyester flags and commercial-grade poles recommended.
Extreme wind — coastal Florida, Gulf Coast. Use storm-rated poles and always have a plan to lower flags before severe weather.
Important: Wind zones are based on ASCE 7 design wind speed maps. Local conditions like elevation, terrain, and nearby structures can affect actual wind loads. Always consult local building codes for permanent installations.
