    Most flagpole failures are maintenance failures, not material failures. Halyard breaks, snap-hook abrasion of the finish, and corroded truck bearings account for the majority of mid-life service calls.

    Spend 15 minutes a month and 1 hour a year and your pole and flag will both last 2–3× longer.

    Daily & Weekly: The Flag

    The flag is a consumable. Both a nylon flag and a 2-ply polyester flag flown 24/7 in average US wind last 9–12 months. Nylon sheds rain and dries fast; polyester absorbs rain and gets significantly heavier during storms, which increases halyard and fly-end wear in wet, windy weather. Inspection points:

    • Fly-end fraying — trim and re-hem if minor (1/2"–1"); replace if frayed past 2"
    • Stripe separation or open seams — repair immediately; ignored seams unzip in one storm
    • Fade — a faded American flag should be respectfully retired per US Flag Code §8(k)
    • Half-staff days — track presidential proclamations and state observances

    Monthly: Hardware

    15-minute check, ideally on the same day each month:

    • Run the halyard through your fingers — look for fuzz, sun-bleach, or stiff spots
    • Inspect both snap hooks — vinyl covering intact, brass spring snappy, no gouging
    • Check cleat tightness and the rope-retention loop
    • Hose-rinse the lower 8 ft of pole (this is where pollen, dirt, and bird waste accumulate)
    • Listen at the truck — a gritty or clicking truck means dirty/dry bearings

    Annual: Halyard & Bearings

    The single most cost-effective maintenance task: replace the halyard every 12 months on a residential pole, every 6–9 months on a commercial pole flying continuously. Solid-braid nylon costs less than $20; a broken halyard at the top of a 30 ft pole costs a service truck.

    If the truck is accessible (telescoping pole, hinged base, or low pole), apply a drop of marine-grade silicone or PTFE lube to the bearing per the manufacturer's instructions. Do not use WD-40 — it washes out and attracts dirt.

    Finish Care

    Anodized and powder-coat finishes are extremely durable, but they don't appreciate abrasive cleaners:

    • Do: mild dish soap, soft cloth or sponge, garden-hose rinse
    • Do: annual wax with non-abrasive automotive paste wax (extends anodize gloss)
    • Don't: steel wool, scouring pads, acidic cleaners (CLR, Lime-Away), bleach, pressure washer above 1,500 psi
    • Don't: let snap hooks bang against the pole — switch to vinyl-covered snaps

    Commercial: NFPA 780 Lightning Ground Test

    Commercial poles per NFPA 780 should have ground continuity tested every 3 years. A clamp-on ground resistance tester (Fluke 1630 or equivalent) reads the resistance to earth at the bond stud. Target: <25 Ω. Re-driving the ground rod or supplementing with a chemical ground brings high readings back into spec. Document the test for your facility records — insurance carriers may require it.

    Storm Prep

    Lower the flag before sustained winds exceed the flag's rated wind speed (typically 50 mph for nylon, 75 mph for 2-ply polyester). Never lower the pole itself for normal storms — properly installed poles are engineered for ASCE 7 design winds. Avoid polishing compounds — they cut through the oxide layer.

    Do I need to take my flagpole down in winter?

    No. A properly installed permanent pole is engineered for year-round exposure including ice loads. Telescoping poles can be lowered for storms or off-season storage if you prefer.
