Tube Geometry & Taper
NAAMM FP-1001 specifies that taper occurs only in the upper 50% of the exposed pole height; the lower half is constant butt diameter. This keeps bending stress concentrated where the section modulus is largest. Vendors that taper the entire length save aluminum but lose capacity.
Standard taper rate: butt diameter steps down to top diameter linearly across the tapered section. A 25 ft pole with 5" butt and 2.5" top tapers from the 12'-6" mark up.
Aluminum Alloy & Temper
Architectural flagpoles are spun or drawn from 6063-T6 aluminum — the same alloy used in window frames and architectural extrusions:
- Yield strength: ~25 ksi (172 MPa)
- Ultimate tensile: ~30 ksi (207 MPa)
- Modulus: 10,000 ksi
- Marine-grade corrosion resistance, satin anodizable finish
Hardware (cleat, truck castings) is typically 356-T6 cast aluminum or stainless. Cheap import poles often substitute 3003-series sheet aluminum — softer, weaker, no T6 heat treat.
Truck Assemblies
The truck is the cap assembly at the top of the pole. Three standard designs:
- Stationary truck — fixed pulley, fixed top. Used on 3" butt poles up to ~20 ft.
- Revolving single-pulley truck — rotates around the pole so the flag weather-vanes. Standard on 4"–8" butt poles.
- Revolving double-pulley truck — two flags or external halyard with retractable cam cleat.
NAAMM spec: stainless steel or sealed nylon bearings, cast aluminum or stainless housing. Plastic trucks are a top-3 cheap-pole failure point.
Halyard, Cleat & Snaps
Standard halyard is solid-braid nylon rope, sized to butt diameter:
- 3" butt → 1/4" halyard
- 4"–5" butt → 5/16" halyard
- 6"+ butt → 3/8" halyard
Cleat is mounted at 5'-0" above finished grade per NAAMM. Snaps are vinyl-covered brass or stainless — vinyl covering prevents the snap from beating against and abrading the pole finish.
Ground Sleeve / Foundation Interface
3"–4" butt poles use a PVC ground sleeve embedded in concrete. 5"+ butt poles use a steel culvert ground sleeve with a copper lightning rod extending 6" into native soil. See foundation depth spec.
The sleeve length is typically 10% of exposed pole height plus 6" — minimum 24" for a 20 ft pole.
Finish Specifications
Standard architectural finishes (all NAAMM-compliant): clear satin anodized (Class I, 0.7 mil), bronze anodized (Class I duranodic), black anodized, and powder-coated white. Mill finish (raw aluminum) is acceptable only for industrial sites. See finish comparison.

What wall thickness do I actually need?
.125" minimum for residential poles 15–25 ft in non-hurricane zones. .156"–.188" for 25–30 ft residential or coastal exposure. .250"+ for commercial poles over 30 ft. Anything thinner than .125" on a 20 ft pole is a budget product, not an engineered flagpole.
Why does butt diameter matter more than total weight?
Bending capacity scales with the square of diameter. A 5" butt pole has roughly 56% more capacity than a 4" butt pole at the same wall thickness — vendors who advertise "heavy" without publishing butt diameter and wall are hiding the spec.
Are revolving trucks better than stationary?
Yes for most uses. A revolving truck lets the flag weather-vane with the wind, dramatically reducing fly-end wear and halyard wrap. Stationary trucks are fine on small (≤20 ft) poles where the flag rarely sees sustained crosswind.
