U.S. Flag Code Lighting Requirements
According to 4 U.S.C. § 6(a), the flag should not be displayed at night unless it is properly illuminated. While this is a guideline rather than an enforceable law, most Americans choose to honor this tradition.
- The light must be directed upward and illuminate the entire flag.
- The light source should provide enough brightness that the flag is clearly recognizable.
- Both ground-mounted (uplight) and top-mounted (downlight) fixtures are acceptable.

Lighting Tips
Positioning
Ground-mounted uplights should be placed 2–4 feet from the base of the pole, angled to illuminate the full length of the flag. Avoid pointing the light directly at neighbors' windows.
Color Temperature
Choose a warm white (3000K–4000K) for a natural look, or daylight (5000K–6000K) for maximum flag color accuracy. Avoid colored lights on the American flag.
Beam Angle
A narrow beam (10°–25°) concentrates light on the flag and reduces light pollution. Wider beams (40°+) may be needed for very tall poles or multiple flags.
Automation
Use a photocell or timer to ensure your light turns on automatically at dusk. This prevents accidental violation of Flag Code etiquette and saves energy.
