Flagpole Lights: Solar & LED Flag Pole Lighting Guide

The U.S. Flag Code states that the American flag should be illuminated if displayed at night. The right flagpole light — solar or hardwired LED — keeps your flag flying around the clock and adds real curb appeal. Below: how many lumens you actually need by pole height, solar flag pole lights versus hardwired fixtures, and the models we recommend.

    U.S. Flag Code Lighting Requirements

According to 4 U.S.C. § 6(a), the flag should not be displayed at night unless it is properly illuminated. While this is a guideline rather than an enforceable law, most Americans choose to honor this tradition.

    • The light must be directed upward and illuminate the entire flag.
    • The light source should provide enough brightness that the flag is clearly recognizable.
    • Both ground-mounted (uplight) and top-mounted (downlight) fixtures are acceptable.

Flagpole Light Lumens by Pole Height

Most lumen charts online are wildly overstated. A flag is a small, highly reflective target, so a 20 ft residential pole looks great on 1,000–2,000 total lumens. The figures below are total output across all fixtures — on taller commercial poles, two or three moderate fixtures light the flag far more evenly than one oversized floodlight.

    Flagpole HeightRecommended Lumens
    20 ft1,000–2,000
    25 ft1,500–2,500
    30 ft2,000–3,500
    35 ft3,000–5,000
    40 ft4,000–6,000
    50 ft6,000–10,000
    60 ft8,000–14,000
    70 ft12,000–18,000
    80 ft15,000–24,000

    * Totals across all fixtures. Very dark rural properties, oversized flags, or multiple flags on one pole push you toward the high end. Top-mounted solar downlights work differently — they sit close to the flag, so 1,000–1,500 lumens is usually plenty on a residential pole.

    Flagpole Lighting FAQ

Does the U.S. Flag Code require flagpole lighting at night?

Yes. Under 4 U.S.C. §6 the American flag may be displayed 24 hours a day only if it is properly illuminated during darkness. Otherwise it should be lowered at sunset and raised again at sunrise.

How many lumens do I need for a flagpole light?

Far fewer than most charts claim: 1,000–2,000 total lumens for a 20 ft residential pole, 2,000–3,500 at 30 ft, and 15,000–24,000 across two or three fixtures on an 80 ft commercial pole.

What is the best solar flagpole light?

For most homeowners, a top-mounted solar downlight that clamps below the ornamental ball. Look for at least 1,000 lumens, a replaceable battery, and a weather-sealed housing rated for year-round outdoor use.

How do you install a solar flag pole light?

Top-mounted solar lights clamp around the pole under the ball or mount to the truck — lower the flag, slide the bracket on, tighten the hardware. Ground-mounted solar uplights stake into the lawn 2–4 feet from the base and aim up at the flag. Neither needs an electrician.

    Lighting Tips

    Positioning

Ground-mounted uplights should be placed 2–4 feet from the base of the pole, angled to illuminate the full length of the flag. Avoid pointing the light directly at neighbors' windows.

    Color Temperature

Choose a warm white (3000K–4000K) for a natural look, or daylight (5000K–6000K) for maximum flag color accuracy. Avoid colored lights on the American flag.

    Beam Angle

A narrow beam (10°–25°) concentrates light on the flag and reduces light pollution. Wider beams (40°+) may be needed for very tall poles or multiple flags.

    Automation

Use a photocell or timer to ensure your light turns on automatically at dusk. This prevents accidental violation of Flag Code etiquette and saves energy.
