Caring for Your American Flag

Your American flag represents our nation's values and deserves proper care. Whether you fly a nylon, polyester, or cotton flag, regular maintenance will keep it looking vibrant and extend its lifespan significantly.

How Often Should You Replace Your Flag?

With proper care, a quality nylon flag typically lasts 6–12 months when flown daily. Factors that affect lifespan include:

• Wind exposure — High wind areas cause more wear
• Sun exposure — UV rays fade colors over time
• Weather conditions — Rain, snow, and humidity accelerate deterioration
• Flag material — Nylon is lightweight and dries quickly; polyester is more durable in heavy wind

How to Clean Your American Flag

Hand washing (recommended):

1. Fill a basin with warm water and mild detergent (no bleach)
2. Gently agitate the flag in the water
3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water
4. Hang to air dry — never put a flag in the dryer

Machine washing: Use the gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Only recommended for nylon flags.

Proper Flag Storage

When not in use, fold your flag properly using the traditional triangle fold:

1. Hold the flag waist-high with another person
2. Fold lengthwise twice so the blue field is on the outside
3. Make triangular folds from the striped end
4. Tuck the remaining fabric into the triangle

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Flag Etiquette Basics

• Display from sunrise to sunset unless illuminated at night
• Never let the flag touch the ground
• Fly at half-staff on designated days
• When worn beyond repair, retire respectfully — many VFW posts and Boy Scout troops hold retirement ceremonies
