    Flagpole Lighting Requirements: Rules and Best Options for Night Display

    According to the U.S. Flag Code, if you fly your flag 24 hours a day, it must be illuminated during darkness.

    What the Flag Code Says

    Section 6(a): The flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during hours of darkness. While advisory for private citizens, it's the standard of respect most owners follow.

    Solar Flagpole Lights

    • Installation: Easiest — no wiring

    • Brightness: Moderate
    • Best for: Residential poles under 25 feet

    LED In-Ground Uplights

    • Installation: Requires burial and wiring
    • Cost: $100-300 + installation
    • Brightness: Excellent
    • Best for: Premium and commercial installations

    Top-Mounted Downlights

    • Installation: Mounts at pole top
    • Cost: $50-200
    • Brightness: Good
    • Best for: Areas without ground space for uplights
