What Size Flag Do I Need? A Complete Flag Size Guide
Choosing the Right Flag Size
A flag that's too small looks lost on a tall pole, and one that's too large can strain your flagpole and wear out quickly. Getting the proportions right ensures your flag display looks sharp and lasts longer.
Flag Size by Flagpole Height
The general rule is your flag should be approximately 1/4 to 1/3 the height of your flagpole in length. Here are the recommended sizes:
| Flagpole Height | Recommended Flag Size |
|---|---|
| 15 feet | 3' x 5' |
| 20 feet | 4' x 6' |
| 25 feet | 5' x 8' |
| 30 feet | 5' x 8' or 6' x 10' |
| 35–40 feet | 6' x 10' |
| 50+ feet | 8' x 12' or larger |
Flag Size for Wall-Mounted Poles
For outrigger or wall-mounted flagpoles (typically 5–8 feet long), a 3' x 5' flag is the standard choice. This size provides good visibility without overwhelming the mount.
Flag Size for Your Home
Consider your home's size when choosing:
- Apartments/condos: 2.5' x 4' or 3' x 5' on a wall mount
- Single-story homes: 3' x 5' to 4' x 6' on a 15–20 foot pole
- Two-story homes: 4' x 6' to 5' x 8' on a 20–25 foot pole
- Estates/large properties: 5' x 8' or larger on a 25+ foot pole
Wind Considerations
In high-wind areas, consider going one size smaller than recommended. A smaller flag creates less drag, reducing stress on the pole and extending both flag and pole life. See our detailed Flag Size & Wind Speed Guide for specific wind ratings.
Material Matters
Flag material affects how it flies:
- Nylon: Lightweight, flies in light breezes, best for most residential use
- Polyester: Heavier, better for high-wind areas, more durable
- Cotton: Traditional look, best for indoor or ceremonial display
